On February 28, 2025, KRINZINGER SCHOTTENFELD opened the group exhibition “ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE 2024,” featuring 11 national and international artists. Their works were created during the Krinzinger Residency Program in Petőmihályfa (Hungary), Kuberton (Croatia), Sri Lanka and Vienna (Austria). The exhibition reflects the unique ecological, social, cultural, and political contexts of these locations, combined with the personal experiences that influenced the artists’ creative processes.

The Artist-in-Residence program offers artists the opportunity to broaden their networks, gain new insights, and create innovative works outside of their usual work environments. Many former participants have since become significant figures in the international art scene.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia, Istarska županija, the One World Foundation, as well as BMKOES for their invaluable support that has made this exhibition possible.

Christian Rothwangl’s paintings oscillate between figuration and abstraction, addressing questions of identity, corporeality, and painterly autonomy. His works condense real experiences and personal memories into independent visual worlds, where material presence and symbolic charge intertwine. The six works presented here were created during a residency in Kuberton, HR, and in the following weeks in Vienna. Positioned between documentary observation and free imagination, they draw from models, photographs, or purely symbolic compositions. One work depicts a wooden figure from a nearby village, its formal and material characteristics translated into the painterly process. The representations fluctuate between figural concreteness and abstract dissolution. While some motifs remain clearly defined in contour and presence, others dissolve into fragmented structures. The use of colored ink on paper reinforces this state of suspension —allowing for a fluid, immediate process in which chance and control intertwine.

Christian Rothwangl (*1993) lives and works in Vienna. His artistic work deals with questions of identity, corporeality, and painterly autonomy.

In his works, real experiences and personal memories condense into independent visual worlds that oscillate between documentary capture and figurative concreteness, free imagination, and dissolution into fragmentary structures. His viewers become the audience of an interplay between chance and control.

Drawings form the starting point of Rothwangl’s works. Motifs are tested, varied, and subsequently placed in new contexts within series. The artist transfers individual figures or visual structures onto canvas, where they are condensed, expanded, or fragmented. The painterly gesture remains open to unexpected developments—revisions, corrections, and mistakes are not seen as disturbances but rather as integral parts of the work.

His paintings are characterized by archetypal figures, fleeting bodies, and open narratives. Foreground and background merge, symbolic and physical elements intertwine. Instead of conveying clear messages, spaces emerge where meanings shift—a dynamic, mystical system that continuously reforms itself and confronts its audience with open questions.

With “Attributes”, Christian Rothwangl presents his first solo exhibition at Galerie Krinzinger Schottenfeld. On display are works in an interplay of impulse-like sketches and slow, layered paintings.

Rothwangl’s creative process begins with abstract compositions that assert themselves against realistic figures. This contrast intensifies the emotional resonance, while details combine the abstract with the figurative.

The artist employs a selective figuration that allows the viewer to decipher the hints of human presence. Faces that emerge from the background, figures that are suggested rather than defined. This intended ambiguity invites a variety of perspectives and encourages a personal dialogue with the artwork. Narratives emerge immediately upon viewing. His works create a mystical unreality that raises questions and encourages viewers to develop their own impressions.

Christian Rothwangl’s paintings are characterized by a certain transparent application of paint, which blurs the boundaries between the individual layers. The artist’s decision to remove the paint with water upon applying it opaquely embodies a certain unforeseeability, which also involves a degree of risk, as this process leaves room for chance and unpredictability.

On March 10th, 2023,  KRINZINGER SCHOTTENFELD opens the exhibition “ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE 2022” – a group exhibition of 10 national and international, emerging and already renowned contemporary artists. The exhibiting artists participated in the Krinzinger residency program in Petőmihályfa (Hungary), Kuberton (Croatia), Sri Lanka and in Vienna (Austria), in 2022 on the invitation of Dr. Ursula Krinzinger. The exhibited works were created in the course of the respective stays of the participating artists and reflect the different local conditions – ecological, social, cultural or political – coupled with the personal experiences of the artists and their influence on individual creative processes. KRINZINGER SCHOTTENFELD (formerly known as Krinzinger Projekte) was founded in 2002 as a project space and extension of the Galerie Krinzinger. Since then, the space has been realizing a very successful international program consisting primarily of thematic group exhibitions displaying fresh artistic positions. The artist-in-residence program is intended to offer national and international artists the opportunity to expand their networks and to produce and collect new impressions outside their usual working environment. Previous participants of the program have, meanwhile, become very successful representatives of important positions in the international art scene.
